If you’ve been struggling with joint, tendon, ligament, and nerve injuries, you know what it’s like to sit on the sidelines as life passes you by. But with advanced regenerative orthopedics and cell therapy treatments, you can get back in the game. As you seek treatment in the cutting-edge world of regenerative medicine, explore PRP injections, or pursue orthopedic care, it’s important you find a doctor who’s not only knowledgeable but personally experienced. In fact, it’s vital. So where can you find such a doctor?
Meet Dr. Joseph Albano, the PRP and regenerative medicine specialist with extensive experience (in more ways than one). Dr. Albano understands advanced regenerative orthopedics and the injuries associated with this field because he’s been through it all himself. What do we mean? Let’s find out.
Real-World Experience in the Military and Beyond
Dr. Albano’s variety of real-world experience in the medical field gives him unique knowledge and perspective that benefits the patients he serves and puts them at ease. He served in the military for 27 years, eventually retiring from the Air Force Reserves as a Senior Flight Surgeon. During his military career, he provided aerospace, occupational, and preventative medical care for pilots, veterans, and their families. He served on-air evacuation flights, emergency rooms, and in numerous minimally-supported foreign locations, including Afghanistan, Jordan, Korea, and Saudi Arabia. As a senior flight surgeon, Joseph Albano was often the sole flight surgeon on squadron deployments, flying in F-16D fighter jets. Now, he’s an FAA-certified Senior Aviation Medical Examiner.
When he wasn’t on military assignments, Dr. Albano spent over two decades in general family practice and sports medicine. Here he worked in rural and suburban settings, as well as overseas. Part of this time he served as a family practitioner in Park City, UT, treating a variety of skiing injuries, as well as numerous other athletic and industrial injuries while serving the area’s highly active population.
Practicing Regenerative Medicine in Utah
Then in 2007, he brought regenerative medicine practices to Utah, giving patients a non-invasive and non-surgical option for treating their orthopedic injuries. As he began to serve patients using cell therapy and regenerative techniques, he made a commitment to taking a whole-body approach towards injuries and ailments, and that’s a commitment he still upholds today. He also incorporated musculoskeletal ultrasound into his diagnostic process for precise cell therapy treatments in damaged tissues. Over the course of his regenerative medicine practice, he’s treated athletes ranging from amateur to Olympic-level, including serving as the team physician for the US Speedskating team, US Military Endurance Sports, Real Salt Lake, and Westminster College Athletics.
Dr. Albano’s accomplishments have made him well-known in regenerative orthopedic circles. He teaches courses in musculoskeletal ultrasound for cell therapy, and he is even partnering with the Food & Drug Administration to set standards for orthopedic regenerative medicine practices. Though his professional experience is extensive enough to give anyone confidence in his abilities, his own personal experience with regenerative medicine is perhaps what makes him stand out most to his patients.
“Yes, I’ve had that done” – An Athlete’s Perspective
Dr. Albano grew up playing hockey, football, baseball, and rugby, as well as participated in track, including the decathlon and javelin. Nowadays he’s still pursuing his love of sports and an active lifestyle at home in Utah, where he’s often seen playing hockey, alpine and backcountry skiing, lifting weights, camping, rafting, ultra-marathon running, and scuba diving (he’s dive-master certified). He has competed in ultramarathons, such as the Wasatch 100, Squaw Peak 50, and the Jupiter Peak Steeplechase, to name a few. His current passion is cyclocross racing.
As a longtime athlete and fitness enthusiast, Dr. Albano personally understands the value of a healthy body to achieve peak performance. This allows him to incorporate an athlete’s perspective in the treatment he provides to his patients, many of whom are athletes themselves.
In addition, his own injuries incurred from a lifetime of athletics help to inform his treatment approach. If there’s an orthopedic injury you can experience as a result of an active lifestyle, it’s likely Dr. Albano has personally dealt with it himself. His long, painful list of injuries includes:
- Bilateral rotator cuff tears
- Broken neck (actually from flying F16s in the military)
- Herniated discs
- Torn biceps tendon
- Tennis elbow
- Carpal tunnel
- Patellar tendinosis
- Knee MCL tear
- Achilles tendinosis and tear
- Plantar fasciosis
- Hip labral tear
- Scaphoid fracture of the wrist
Doesn’t that list make you want to say, “ouch!”? With all his injuries, Dr. Albano knows what it’s like to have pain hold you back. He’s not “surgery-hungry,” realizing that surgery shouldn’t automatically be the first treatment for injuries, if possible. Instead, he focuses on non-surgical options for healing tendon, nerve, and cartilage problems. As a result, he’s helped hundreds of patients get back to their active lifestyles without surgery through PRP injections and other advanced regenerative orthopedics. So for all his patients going through treatment themselves, he can personally relate, easily saying, “Yes, I’ve had that done.”
